The Pros and Cons?

Thinking about getting a cargo net? Learn more about cargo nets with pros and cons.

Why should I get a Cargo Net for my truck?

Cargo Nets are the best, and most versatile, tool for keeping your "stuff" safely secured, and your truck bed free from clutter.

  • Why not a tarp? Cargo nets are transparent! This allows for much easier use when applying over your loads, ensuring you get all those hidden corners.
  • Why not a solid truck bed cover? Cargo nets are flexible! Trying to haul different sizes objects? Cargo nets are the ideal solution to accommodate random branches, different sized boxes, trips to the dump, camping, or whatever you have in mind.
    • Not to mention, a net is easy to fold up a side or a corner to add or remove an additional item. They also supply the highest level of convenience- multiple tie down anchor points and easy to slip on and off.
  • Why not bungie cords? Cargo nets are heavy duty! Cargo nets are often weight rated, durable, and made to last. You can also depend on them not to break or snap- especially after being exposed to the elements!
    • Usually cargo nets are UV treated which prevents them from getting brittle or damaged from the sun.
Pros
  • All-in-one solutions- no need for individual straps for each item
  • Versatile and convenient
  • Quick- usually just need to be tossed over your load and tightened
  • Generally load rated, providing peace-of-mind
Cons
  • While the materials are UV treated and weather proof, usually not waterproof (though we DO carry a waterproof option!)

How do I pick a product?

There are seemingly infinite options for cargo net options available. With so many options it can be daunting trying to find the right "fit". When starting to explore the market be prepared with some baseline information:

  • Application
    • What are you looking to carry in your truck? Might this change over time? Don't get caught up on the single use that made you consider a net in the first place
  • Size
    • Obviously... start by measuring your truck bed! Most cargo nets will be pre-dimensioned to work in standard truck sizes.
    • Consider the vertical clearance above the truck bed rails- add one foot of length and width for each foot of vertical clearance.
    • The better companies will also offer a wide array of alternate sizes to accommodate any application.
    • Look for options with multiple attachment points. These will allow you to make the net bigger or smaller, depending on your use.
    • Don't forget the attachment hardware will also add to the total dimension of the net.
  • Durability
    • Most cargo nets will have a Working Load Limit (WLL) or rating which can help guide you on which product may work best for you. While many commercial applications may require this, most home uses will never exceed these.
    • More importantly, check the manufacturing materials as higher quality mesh and webbing will result in a more durable product.
  • Storage
    • Will your net live in the bed of your truck? Crumpled in the back seat for weekend use? If not, consider products that include a storage bag to simply keep folded up in the garage.
